It became apparent to me, sometime in the 70s, that the artistic expression I thought was in many ways the most compelling - the popular music of singer/songwriters - was more or less completely unrepresented in the medium that was the most pervasive: television. My work in photography had always involved interacting with these singer-songwriters to try and develop images that at a minimum related to what they were writing and, at best, extended it. "Quadrophenia" is certainly one of the best examples. Add to the equation that in university I wanted to become a writer, and it all morphed into a decision to try and bring the musical narrative to screen. With several starts and stops (an attempt to bring a dramatic.musical version of "Quadrophenia" to prime time television) the initial iteration of some of those ideas found expression in the first film I did with Leon Redbone, followed shortly by another with Rickie Lee Jones. They had quite an impact, these early films, procuring for me a deal at Paramount. They were at least part of the groundwork out of which grew MTV. |
